i was update my laptop (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T41) from alpha to beta-karmic. and i have the same "problem" - no desktop/background.

if i disable compiz - i have my desktop(folders/files) and also a wallpaper. dmesg say:

[ 14.809402] Linux agpgart interface v0.103
[ 15.055296] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: Intel 855PM Chipset
[ 15.070235] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xd0000000
[ 15.506587] shpchp: Standard Hot Plug PCI Controller Driver version: 0.4

my gcard on laptop:

    * ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 with 32MB or
    * ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 with 32MB

this chip can not display "normal" compiz settings without problems. now, without compiz the laptop works fine.

Please change the bug affects to ATI drivers, this is not a gnome/nautilus/compiz specific error. And add your graphics card to the bug report title.

Changed in meta-gnome2 (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete
