I'm also having hard lock ups here requiring a alt+sysrq REISUB to reboot. Noticing it happen while playing the openGL game Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory while compiz is enabled. Just wanted to add an 'also affected'

I would imagine that my problem is related here: the OpenGL screensaver BlinkBox has, on numerous occasions, appeared to cause Compiz to freak out and die after a period of usage (ie, not immediately when the screensaver starts up, but after a while, when I come back to my machine, it appears to be locked up). Sometimes I can get my machine back into a decent state by turning off compiz and turning it back on again. Sometimes X is so unresponsive that I have to restart gdm. Once, the whole machine appeared to be completely locked up and I had to reboot.

I didn't have this issue with Jaunty -- but it may be related rather to the drivers? I've noticed some people having issues with the nvidia 185 drivers (and we can't install the previously working 180 drivers because it's just a dummy package ): ).

I'm about to try installing the 173 drivers to see if that fixes the problem. Alternatively, I'll try the nvidia ppa with the latest beta drivers (at my own risk, of course (: )

Ok, so I can't install the 173 drivers -- which would explain why jocky only gives me the option of the 185 drivers...

But the 190 drivers from the ppa mentioned at: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install-nvidia-190-25-beta-drivers-in-ubuntu-jauntyintrepidhardy.html are giving me more joy -- I left my machine for the day and came back to *no* graphics corruption (something new for my Karmic system). So perhaps the problem isn't compiz -- *perhaps* the problem is just simply badly QA'd proprietary drivers with no backup to previously known good drivers (ie, the 180 series).

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
