Bug Description

For the last few months I have been using the Catalyst 9.4 drivers for my ATI Radeon HD2600 Graphics Card and suspend/resume works fine. But recently I re-installed Ubuntu 9.04 from scratch and am now using the open source "radeon" driver because I now use an external monitor, and the open source driver plays much nicer with dual head than the closed source driver does. I'm using Metacity, not Compiz.

Upon suspend, the sleep light will "snooze" and the computer will properly suspend, but when resume is attempted, the screen will not turn on again and there is no HDD access. I think it's definitely a problem with the graphics card drivers, as I think it might be resuming but just not turning on the screen.

Here's my Laptop specs:

Toshiba Satellite A200
Intel® CoreTM 2 Duo Processor T7500
320GB (160GB + 160GB) (5400rpm) SATA
3GB (2GB+1GB) DDR2 (667)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 512MB
Intel® High Definition Audio
Integrated Intel 802.11 a/g/n
Jaunty 9.04 amd64

Open source driver:

xserver-xorg-video-radeon version 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2

Might be worth mentioning that hibernate works, it's just very slow to resume from hibernate.

Launchpad is screwing up (not saving the edit, big red outline around the editing box) when I try to edit the description, so here's what the edited second paragraph of my description:

Upon suspend, the computer will go to sleep and the power light will turn orange and "snooze", but when resume is attempted, the screen will not turn on again and there is no HDD access. No keyboard commands work, I cannot get into any virtual terminals or anything. The only way to exit is to do a hard reset by holding down the power button.
I think it's definitely a problem with the graphics card drivers, as I think it might be resuming but just not turning on the screen.

Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . If the issue remains with Karmic it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Thanks in advance.

Thanks also for providing the detailed information for this bug. Should the Karmic release and upstream prove to have the same issue, please provide the same apport information for that.

Hi Jeremy,

I'll try to test it with the Karmic LiveCD. Unfortunately my home internet is not fast enough to download an ISO, so I have to go to university to use the internet but I won't be going in there today.

If someone else has this same bug could they test it out with karmic?

Tested it with the karmic beta LiveCD off a USB pen drive, and it still does the same thing. Won't resume from sleep.

I have the same problem with my A200 for more then a year. Still it doesn't work as it should on Karmic. Try to put attached file to /etc/hal/fdi/information/ and check if that helps.

Alexey, I tried putting that file into /etc/hal/fdi/information but it doesn't do anything.

It's interesting because suspend worked fine with the fglrx drivers, so I am thinking that this is definitely a problem with the open source ati drivers.

I think when Karmic comes out I will switch back to the 9.10 fglrx drivers, as I have heard these fix a number of issues with dual screen support, which is why I changed to open source drivers in the first place. Hopefully the 9.10 fglrx drivers will fix both my dual screen and suspend issues.

If anyone knows of a fix for this bug though, it would be nice to iron it out.

I upgraded to Karmic RC yesterday and I'd like to note that suspend is now working great, but hibernate is not working at all.

Due to a problem with GRUB2, I had to do a fresh install of Karmic RC today. It fixed most of my problems, but, unfortunately brought back the suspend/resume bug :(

So somehow, somewhere along the line it was working between Jaunty and Karmic, but a fresh install of Karmic renders it not working again. O.o

Hi could I get an update on this please? Why is it marked incomplete? What else do you need? Just tell me what to do and I'll do it.
