Bug Description
Good day,
I'm not able to make my HP LaserJet 1000 (usb) printer works with Ubuntu dapper.
This printers works fine with breezy if you manually download the latest foo2zjs driver from :
http://
(foo2zjs in breezy doesn't have the firmware)
Under dapper, the firmware autoloading works fine but every thing I print stay in the queue without any error message (even with LogLevel set to debug).
But if I downgraded cupsys and libcupsys to breezy version (and replace /var/run/
I'm happy to provide additional info or test something if needed.
Regards.

Same problem here, If I use the dapper foo2zjs build it gets detected and gives no problems in the CUPS management untill you send a printjob.
CUPS complains about "printer busy trying again in 5 seconds" and in my cups I find this:

Do:
sudo dpkg --purge hplip-base
sudo apt-get --reinstall install hplip
sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
Try adding you printer then. Soon we will have new CUPS packages in Dapper which should help most of these errors.

Functions! This change and:

If you are interested in helping with this bug, please add:
deb http://

Those who have /dev/usb/lp0 are using wrong kernel. Please install linux-686 (or -386 or -k7 or...) package.
Thank you.

Try adding a new printer trough gnome-cups-manager and then print test page. Don't change anything manually, just add it like it shoulde be done.

I got the message the cups server can not be detected to. it was becauseof a false deviceUri in printers.conf.
i have deleted printers.conf and error_log and restarted cups reinstalled the printer and tried to print a testpage: here is the log file: http://

This is from: http://
It worked for me too. Here is the relevant text:
"1- it seems that the hplip 0.9.7 has some problems recognising usb printers. Solution is to install the latest HPLIP version from hplip.sourcefor
2- some printers are special: like mine for instance (HP laserjet 1000) requires that it's firmware be downloaded to the printer at every power up. When I tried to install the printer in the new environment, there was no driver for my specific printer. I went ahead selecting a "close model" and I get the exact same result as "everything works as expected but the printer does not print". After some research, I discovered the pecurliar behavior of my printer when I found a linux printer driver for it at http:// foo2rjs.rkkda.com.
I can correlate this behavior with some people having "intermittent" problems with their printer if they shut them off between their computing sessions. So, in cases like this, make sure that you have the exact driver for your printer. I have found the link to my driver in Google by searching with "linux HP 1000 printer driver". Try it with your printer and see what comes out of it.
One final detail: make sure that user cupsys is registered in the lpadmin group. Another detail that I am not sure if it makes a difference (I did not test all possibilities) but I set the access right to /dev/usblp0 to rw for owner, group and others.
After setting all other CUPS and Samba networking configuration, I can now print from the local linux workstation, the remote linux workstation and any windows workstations on my network (I am a newbie with linux but and old, old goat with computers in general"
FOLLOW UP COMMENTS: The HPLIP update to 1.6.6 fixed my machine as well as the printing problems associated with SAMBA. The ODD part is that I too have a Laserjet 1000 and HPLIP specifically does NOT support this printer. But upon upgrading the printer showed up on the correct USB port and everything worked fine.
Sorush.Nazari (s-nazari) wrote : | #30 |
guys update I think I have fixed everything now .. the DiviceURI was typed
in correctly.. as soon as i changed it and saved the .txt conf. file the
whole thing just started up and ran fine.

Choose driver HP - Laserjet 1000 foo2zjs
Voila, it prints!

The LaserJet 1000 is not supported by HPLIP, so Ante's HPLIP update most probably will not have fixed this problem, but the "apt-get dist-upgrade" has most probably also pulled the foo2zjs update from the official repositories.
Philip Yusenda (phil-yusenda) wrote : | #34 |
@Till
I don't think so
Before the steps above, I've updated the foo2zjs with the instructions from http://
Also, the "apt-get dist-upgrade" doesn't touch foo2zjs, but only hplip hpijs hplip-data . The strange thing is, hpijs-ppds dissapear also. "The package has no installation candidate"

JohnFlux, can you report a new bug with that? Needing to unload a kernel module is a kernel problem. Assign it to the package linux-source-
I have this printer available as well. If more info is needed i might be able to supply it as well.
At first looks I can confirm the bugreport. Works in breezy, not in dapper.
Out of the box nothing happened in dapper (it did get recognized, etc, dmesg). After installing foo2zjs with firmware and hotplug script it makes some startup noises. This is the same for breezy btw. But in breezy you can actually print and in dapper nothing happens.
