Noticed it would not work on the command line also. Re-installing Ubuntu 9.04 to see if it is hardware or software. This burner does work in Vista.

Solved, the firmware for the DVD-drive (DVD+-RW GS20N) was version A110, which added Windows 7 support, was installed on the laptop at the factory. Downgrading to A108 fixed the problem.
