Bug Description
Binary package hint: viking
When attempting to acquire waypoints/tracks from my GPS device in Viking 0.9.8, I get the following message box: "Aquire from GPS - Done. device: N/A" which seems to indicate that the GPS device couldn't be found. After this Viking proceeds to create a new layer called "Acquired from GPS" with no data in it. I would expect that if no data could be acquired no new layer should be created.
It doesn't appear to matter what I specify in the "Serial Port:" text box. For what it's worth, here is the output lsusb produces when my GPS device is connected and turned on:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 091e:0003 Garmin International GPSmap (various models)
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 045e:0084 Microsoft Corp. Basic Optical Mouse
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 on a Dell Inspiron 6000.

Point 1 about creating a layer when there is no data - this iss fixed in Natty (0.9.94-3)
Point 2, also in Natty (0.9.94-3), there is rudimentary USB device detection.
Indeed, your 'Garmin' (what device exactly is it?) may not actually communicate via the Garmin GPS protocol, and you can simply browse files on the USB storage device and load gpx files directly.
Normally Garmin hand held types (e.g. Etrex range) talk the Garmin GPS protocol, whereas 'Sat Nav' types (e.g. Nuvi range) tend to be USB storage devices.
