Bug Description

Binary package hint: gcc-3.3

The package doesn't exist in Karmic, so I can't provide the usual information.

This is a "wishlist" item.

Can libstdc++5 be made available in the repositories (at least in universe) so that proprietary software which depends on them (such as Mathematica 6) can still work when upgraded to Karmic? I understand if Canonical doesn't want to use the resources to support both libstdc++6 and libstdc++5 at the same time, but at least with the package in universe programs would continue to function.

The same problem with Oracle 10g and 11g:
INFO: /usr/bin/ld: warning: libstdc++.so.5, needed by /opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/ctx/lib//libsc_ca.so, not found
Is it possible to have this library in Karmic repository (compat package)?

A quick workaround is to grab the package from Jaunty, which is compatible with Karmic:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libstdc++5

I would like to second this request. I've got to setup Mathematica 6 on a lot of computers, and this would make my life much easier.

Since upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, Abaqus 6.9.2 fails with the message "error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".

Just install the package from Jaunty, it is compatible with Karmic. To do this you visit the repository page for the package:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libstdc++5

Then scroll down to "Download libstdc++5" and choose your architecture (32-bit = i386, 64-bit = amd64). When the download page opens just click the link for a mirror in your area. After the file has downloaded then a window should pop up allowing you to install the package.

Thanks for your suggestion, I ended up downloading libstdc++5 from Debian:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libstdc++5
It works around the problem, but I feel Ubuntu would be more user friendly if libstdc++5 was available in the repositories.

Another commercial package that relies on libstdc++5:
