Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

In Power Manager I set that the screen suspends after 1 minute.
So I locked the screen and after one minute, the screen does turn off, but then immediately turns back on and shows the blank screen (which is my screensaver). This process then repeats indefinitely.

My screen has never suspended with jaunty or karmic 64. Wakes up right after being suspended. I can't leave my computer on or I have to remember to turn my monitor off, very inconvenient.

Work Around:

If you anyways use the black screen on the screenserver. You will not need it. I have just removed the screen-saver package And now the screen turns off perfectly.

This did not work for me. I removed gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver-gl
and the same behaviour results - the monitor turns off and then back on to a
black screen.

Hi Benjamin

Sorry for the very bad description.

I actually did not remove the screensaver itself but:

screensaver-default-images
ubuntu-desktop

Have just removed the screensaver itself after I read your post, and then it does not work for me either.

This is a bug in the xserver.

It looks like we are missing this patch in Ubuntu:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=c1d901d723c3bee523736eacc15b44a7dff484fe

With this patch I can't reproduce the problem any more.

Running Karmic final and this issue has not been fixed. This wasn't an issue in 9.04. I don't think issue #289728 is a duplicate. I am running xinerama + nvidia v185 drivers. The issue takes a few hours to manifest itself. Tangent: am surprised at the number of regressions in Karmic.

@Marten
What do you mean when you say that "the issue takes a few hours to manifest"? Does it work at first but then fails after a few hours?

Correct; the screen does a proper power off (as does the external monitor) followed by powering back on in response to user input for about twelve hours after the X session is started. Once the problem begins, the only way to restore the correct screen power off behaviour is to completely restart the X session (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart). I've just noticed in the last day or so that having the power management display sleep value be less than the screen saver blank period seems to delay the onset of the issue.
