[Karmic] After boot, stuck at blank screen; need to press Alt+F7 to get X to begin starting

Bug Description

When booting Karmic, it grinds away for a bit, then suddenly stops with a completely blank screen. Pressing any key shows (what I would guess to be vt01) a console. I need to manually press Alt+F7, at which point the X server suddenly starts doing it's thing, I get the Ubuntu Karmic spotlight image for a while, and eventually a GDM login screen.

Ideally the system would boot straight to GDM.

Not necessarily, it could be related, but it happens for me too with an ATI X1400 graphics card (on Lenovo Thinkpad T61)

This problem is still extant. The fix packaged at bug #434361 did not avert the situation.

Hi afcowie,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
