Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdeprint

I'm not able to add my network printer (HP Color LaserJet 4650). Under system settings, I choose "Printers" -> "Add" -> "Add Printer/Class" -> "Next" -> "Network printer w/IPP (IPP/HTTP)". Under "Printer URI" I enter "192.168.0.44:9100". I choose the manufacturer "HP" and model "Color LaserJet 4650". I choose the driver "HP Color LaserJet 4650 Postscript (recommended) [English]". Then I just click "Next" a few times until finally the following error message appears:
"Unable to create printer. Error message received from manager: The requested operation cannot be completed."
I've also tried it in administrator mode, but I get the same error message.

Hi, I am not really sure how to triage this bug, however, we can try a few things.

Could you run the program in a terminal? If so, please run it appending " &> output" at the end, then attach the file here.

Also, could you check /var/log/cups/error_log for output when the error occurs? Try for example "watch cat /var/log/cups/error_log", or just check the date and time for the relevant lines, then paste them here.

I hope we can catch it!

Same error adding a LaserJet 1300 Network (TCP) printer. Nothing in the CUPS error_log. The ouput file contains a parser error.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using?

Also, can you paste the output of "cat /etc/modules | grep lp" ?

What's the name of the program? I do not know it so I'm not able to run it in a terminal (and it's not kprinter).

I'm using Dapper Drake with the latest packages (always do apt-get update && apt-get upgrade).

/var/log/cups/error_log is an empty file.

$ cat /etc/modules | grep lp
lp

Perhaps the program name is kcontrol ?

Could you try the option "Printers" -> "Add" -> "Add Printer/Class" -> "Next" -> "Network printer (TCP)" (or something similar, I am not running dapper right now)

Could you choose "Printers" -> "Add" -> "Add Printer/Class" -> "Next" ->"Other" and enter the URI "socket://192.168.0.44:9100" ?

OK, I've entered socket://192.168.0.44:9100 as the URI and it worked. However, I'm pretty sure that I've tried that yesterday and it didn't work. Today I did an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, and I guess that one of the updated packages fixed that problem.

I'm having this problem as well, trying to install a printer over samba.
The error is:
"Unable to create printer. Error message received from manager: The requested operation cannot be completed."

It occurs during installation, right after the driver has been installed (the first time it allows you to print a test page).

running from shell gives:

Is this still a problem with the system-config-printer-kde applet in Intrepid? (Replaces the printer kcm module, though you can't find system-config-printer-kde in systemsettings)
