My problem went away after I removed a bunch of my user's stuff from /tmp, as I was havign a whole lot of profile-related issues with opening the xterm, firefox and update manager.

]$ rm -R /tmp/*

(other users' stuff is not touched...)

I was able to remove the files in the /tmp directory, but this did not solve the issue. Each time, I try to update with update manager, I'm prompted to provide a password. Then a new window pops up requesting to either "authenticate" or "cancel" the update. These buttons are unresponsive and ?cause? the crash.

Thanks for your bugreport.

This seems to be the same issue as bug #445303 - there are screenshots in this report, can you please check if the symptoms are the same?

I can no longer update with update manager. I'm prompted to authenticate twice, in the first dialog box there is a field to provide a password. Then a second window pops up requesting to either authenticate or cancel, but providing no field to enter a pwd. Neither of the buttons is responsive and the only way get beyond this dialog box is to hit X, which results in a crash.
