[Karmic] CPU audible through laptop speakers

Bug Description

I've been having an issue where the audio in the current build of Karmic is a bit cludgy. It tends to audibly pop on when audio is set to play and crackle constantly through the speakers whenever there is no sound being transmitted. It seems that it may be making audible the signals of the CPU through the speaker, as the noise coming out is generally relative to the activity of the computer at the time.

Running updated 9.10 Karmic development branch.

A few thoughts...

1) Does it work better in other operating systems and/or distributions, i e can we rule out broken or bad quality hardware?

2) If you issue the command "alsamixer -c 0" and fiddle around with the "Master" and "PCM" settings, will that affect the behavior?

These symptoms are reminiscent of a noisy bus, which is nothing that
ALSA or PulseAudio can work around. You may have some luck attempting
to set the PCI latency.

Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p alsa-base 435725

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

Please let us know your results.
