switching display from monitor to laptop screen makes windows disapear

dell E4300
setup with port replicator.

When working on the 24" screen and you want to take along your laptop you can hit FN+F8 so that the switch to you laptop screen occurs. Then the desktop you see all apps are gone. They are still running so I have to killall of them to reopen some like gnome terminal.
