Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

In the new GDM theme used in 9.10 preview, after a username + mugshot has been selected in the GDM chooser, a password entry box is displayed below.

This entry box is *not* focused by default. Additionally, if the user is particularly fast at clicking on the password box to focus it with the mouse, then fast at starting to type their password the focus maybe moved "back" to the single-entry username box leaving only half of the password entered.

Ideally, focus should be placed on the password box by default; and the username widget should be made *non-focusable*, as at that point there is only one entry displayed (the name of the user attempting to log in) and the user therefore cannot interact with the username widget in any useful way.

1. Install Ubuntu on a computer

3. Click on the default username
4. Enter password (password does not appear because widget is not focused)

1. Install Ubuntu on a computer
2. Boot it up
3. Click on the default username
4. Click on password textbox really quickly
5. Enter password really quickly (password half appears as '*' asterisks, and then stops as focus is moved back to user widget)

Changing to new, the focus goes correctly on the password entry there but it might be a timing issue

Managed to trigger the latter one earlier today whilst logging in. Can't reproduce it on-demand.

Thinking back, I've only hit this on the laptop with the trackpad, so I reckon it must be from palming the pad during password entry, with the mouse pointer still left hovering over the where the username selector was.

I am able to reproduce this consistently without touching the trackpad. All you seem to need is several login name possibilities. Click on the top one, and the cursor appears in the password field but the pointer is still elsewhere. Start typing the password and observe that part way through the focus is lost and your input goes nowhere. Normally you don't notice until your attempted login fails.
