Bug Description

I can't seem to get CPU Frequency Scaling to work on Kubuntu Dapper.
My CPU keeps running at 800.124 MHz.

sh -x /etc/init.d/powernowd start says:

* Starting powernowd... ++ /usr/bin/expr 180 - 1
+ /usr/bin/tput hpa 179
                                                                                                                                                                                   + printf ' '
 + check_kernel
+ CPUFREQ=/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq
+ '[' -f /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor ']'
+ return 1
+ log_success_msg 'CPU frequency scaling not supported'
+ log_use_usplash
+ type usplash_write
+ usplash_write 'STATUS CPU frequency scaling not supported'
+ echo ' * CPU frequency scaling not supported'
 * CPU frequency scaling not supported
+ log_end_msg 0

I tried booting with the 2.6.15-20-386 kernel but it didnt work with that one, too.

root@loopy2:~# modprobe speedstep_centrino
FATAL: Error inserting speedstep_centrino (/lib/modules/2.6.15-21-686/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-centrino.ko): No such device

Thanks for the bug report. Does this still occur with Dapper or Edgy?

Is this a duplicate of bug 28433?

I had this problem on my PC but I have fixed it.

When I originally installed Ubuntu Edgy everything worked fine. I booted up and the CPU Frequency Scaled as expected.

Then I started to play with the setting of the Login Window (System>Administration>Login Window) There I unchecked "Show Actions Menu". From then on, every time I booted up, I got the message CPU Frequency Scaling Not Supported. (I did note that on a reboot the message was not shown and the CPU scaled as expected).

After setting the "Show Actions Menu" on, I now boot every time with no problems what so ever.

It is a mystery to me why this problem should be caused by unticking that box in the Login Window menu, and also why a reboot (not a complete shutdown) would make it go away.
