Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

-I powered on the computer, Ubuntu booted up normally. The mouse pointer showed the little round circle as if processing but it would not go back to the normal arrow.
-All applications had no window border and would appear one line (width of bottom panel) above the bottom panel.

I went into appearance and noticed that visual effects were set to NONE. When I changed the visual effects to NORMAL the window border came back to normal. However, when I opened the update manager, the "starting update manager" window had no window border yet other application did. I rechecked the appearance>visual effects and it was back to NONE.

* also for some reason the numpad stopped working even with numlock on or off

This sounds to be an issue with Ubuntu (Karmic) affecting everything and not really an ubuntuone-client problem.

This is an issue with compiz I presume. I had similar trouble with a recent update, which I worked around by switching back to metacity for the interim.

affects: ubuntuone-client (Ubuntu) → compiz (Ubuntu)

What version of compiz are you using? What is the output of `dpkg --list | grep compiz`?

This is the complete output of `dpkg --list | grep compiz` . I am not sure how to change back to metacity from interim. I checked again today and it was the same but all I do is change the settings to NORMAL and it comes back to normal. The settings dont stay at normal because I noticed that after I close it (appearance>visual effects) and reopen it again the settings have switched back to NONE but window border stays normal. So it only happens everytime I reboot or start the computer. The settings dont seem to save.

THANKS ALL

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 432871

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I see the problem, your compiz configuration has gotten corrupted somehow. Your plugins list is completely empty. Run the following command then try to start compiz again:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz

That will set your compiz settings back to the defaults and it should all work again.

The window border did come back but once I restarted again it wasnt there. I went back to the terminal loaded compiz and the border became visible again. The same output as above.

Ok, now we get back to first information you gave me, I should have noticed this early. Half of compiz is currently uninstalled. Install the compiz package and everything should start working again.
