Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I downloaded the Ubuntu karmic alpha-6 live CD and put it on my USB stick. When I started it, the xsplash screen appears. The screen goes black and then the xsplash screen reappears. The screen goes black again and then the xsplash screen reappears. This continues ten times until I pressed ctlr+alt+f1 and the xsplash freezes.

If I selected to install Ubuntu instead of starting the live environment, then I can install Ubuntu. In the installed system I have no problems.

My system is also affected by this bug since Karmic Koala Alpha 5 (in Alpha 4, this problem did not exist). If you want to have information about my system, please refer to http://michigreat.a.wiki-site.com/index.php/Michimain

I am having the same difficulty with a Gateway M-6862 (Core2 Duo/T5750 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 video adapter). The issue appears both in the i386 as well as the amd64 live CD images of both Alpha 6 and Alpha 5. Ctrl-Alt-F1 has no effect. I have not confirmed that if I select the install Ubuntu option, that I can install. The problem does NOT appear in Kubuntu Karmic Koala Alpha 3. No testing was done using Alpha 4.

I am having the same problem with HD3200 onboard graphics. It seemed to me that all the ttys are filled with xsplash.

Following an install of the Alpha 6 CD (using a user name to authenticate at boot time), I find I cannot log in. As soon as select my user name and enter my credentials, Ubuntu recycles back to the log in display.

We've incorporated a lot of changes for -ati, including using KMS by default. I notice this bug hasn't been commented on in some time and am wondering if it's even still valid. Can you re-test it on Lucid and if you are able to reproduce it please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg, and nominate it for lucid and we may be able to forward it upstream from there.

It was already fixed in the final karmic version.
