Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome

The show desktop button says, "Click here to hide all windows and show the desktop." However, when you click the button, it does not hide all windows and show the desktop. Instead, the button unminimizes all minimized windows. The second click of the button will perform the desired and expected behavior.

It's very annoying on laptops and slower desktops to have all your windows suddenly fling open when your trying to get to your desktop because it causes huge slowdowns as unneeded programs are loaded up.

The user cannot predict the behavior of the button, unless they remember having applications minimized. Sometimes it's one click to show the desktop, and sometimes it's two clicks to show the desktop.

affects: meta-gnome2 (Ubuntu) → gnome-panel (Ubuntu)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:
1. Is this reproducible?
2. If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug? Be as detailed as possible.
This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

The applet works fine for me on karmic though.

This problem does in fact exist in Jaunty for me. Here are steps to reproduce for me:

I have two windows, both showing. I minimize them with the applet. Afterwards, I bring one of the windows up, leaving the other minimized. If I click on the minimize button again, it will un-minimize all windows before I can minimize them again.

The applet seems to function as an actual "button". I can tell when it's not going to do when it should because it's beveled inward, as if "active".

It really shouldn't do that. It should show the desktop when it's pressed.

I just switched from Compiz to Metacity.

The behavior works as it should with Metacity. This is a Compiz bug.

Is someone using Compiz on Karmic, or the recently released version 0.8.4? Can someone confirm if it still exists?
