Bug Description

byobu includes update-notifier-common dependency, which in turn includes gconf2, which requires 8 other dependencies that eventually seems to bring the whole GNOME subsystem. What is the reason for console byobu to have this update-notifier-common dependency? I can see updates notifications even without it.

Actually, update-notifier-common needs to remain in the Recommends, as it provides the apt-check binary that we use to determine the number of updates available.

I think your bug is actually against the update-notifier-common package in Debian, as it should not bring in the graphical frontend utilities. It certainly doesn't in Ubuntu.

I wish I had an interface to reassign this bug to Debian.

On your debian system, use: "reportbug update-notifier-common". It
should guide you through the bits required to do so.

When you get a debian bug number via email, you can link it to this
bug report in launchpad by pasting the Debian URL here:
