this is actually a bug in update-notifier, not update-manager.

attached is an svg version of the "updates-notifier" image that could be used by the application (currently the only version icon is located at /usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps/updates-notifier.png). Not very detailed, but at least it scales :)

Perhaps the tango project has an icon that would do the job better?

Is it desirable to use that replacement icon? Michael, would that be your decision?

Jakub always suggests to not use svg icons for small resolutions. So I would suggest not to only add a SVG version, but also one for 22x22.

There is a Tango one, but the used metaphor doesn't seem to attract user's attention enough.

There are some much better looking icons in the official gnome icon theme! Would these be good candidates for replacing the not-so-cool looking orange one we have currently?

/usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/status/software-update-available.svg
/usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/status/software-update-urgent.svg

/usr/share/icons/gnome/22x22/status/software-update-available.png
/usr/share/icons/gnome/22x22/status/software-update-urgent.png

and plenty of other pixel-perfect resolutions. Wouldn't it be great?

I like most of them, but dislike the folder icons. They look simple and dull.

the folder icons have nothing to do with this AFAIK.

From what I remember the update notifier only really needs two or three icons, which can be dynamically loaded from the current GTK icon theme (and that means that if the current icon theme has no such icons, it will most likely fallback on the gnome icon theme anyway)

On Gutsy the icon does look rather blurry, it was far more clear on Feisty.

Addressing this would fix the problem.

i was wondering if my bugreport 149380 would be caused by the same reason these icons described above look blurry.
if so, that one can be marked as a duplicate :]

This is how the icon is displayed in avant-window-navigator notification area. It's tooooooo large!
But it's strange that sometimes the icon displays just the normal size
