Bug Description

The cdrom is not mounted in Ubuntu 9.10 alpha 5 with all latest updates (2.6.31-10 kernel). Before system update the cdrom could be mounted, but not anymore.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 alpha 5 in VirtualBox 3.06 on a Windows XP host, but I don't think that is the problem since it have worked before and still works in Ubuntu 9.04.

I can confirm this on a working, physical Karmic-machine with all the latest updates. When I insert a CD or DVD it doesn't get mounted automatically whereas it worked before. I haven't inserted a DVD in the last few days so I can't say when exactly the breakage occurred.

manually mounting the drives works, however.

Did some further testing: Some CDs/DVDs are mounted, some not. Discs that can be mounted are mounted every time I insert them, discs that are not mounted also fail every single time. However I did not find any apparent reason why some discs fail and some don't.

In my case have found that the media that refuses to mount tends to be newer movie DVDs. Older DVDs, data discs, music CDs are OK for me. I suspect the problem is down to some kind of DRM encryption used by the DVD producers, but I am not sure. These discs used to be supported, is it possible one of Ubuntu's decryption schemes has been removed or broken?

My TS-L632D DVD drive and media are all region 2.

I feel I should also mention that I have had some trouble burning DVDs, that seems to coincide with the not-mounting problem. Maybe other sufferers of this bug could confirm whether they are related.
The default Brasero burning software didn't work (it would claim to work, then spit out an error and an unusable disc at the end of the burning process.) I switched to Gnomebaker for my burning needs and that problem went away. The not-mounting problem persists.

If the not-burning and not-mounting problems are related, perhaps the cause of the problem could be found by examining what resources gnomebaker and Brasero have in common, and what they implement independently.
Whatever the bug is, I suspect it was introduced in about April or May 2009, since that seems to be about the time the problems began.

I'm not so sure about the DRM thing, it didn't even mount the FreeSoftwareFoundation's gNewSense source-DVD I had lying around ;) Or the Win7 RC DVD I got from a buddy (which may actually be a good thing^^).

However, I hope the switch from hal to udev goes swiftly and that the mount-problems disappear with that change.

I've found the GnewSense source download. Will d/l it, burn it (from a different machine) and see if my machine behaves the same as yours, then report back. I don't have any Windows discs to play with though. (and don't particularly want any=-)

further testing (also done by guys on ubuntuforums) has brought me to the point that no CD or DVD will be auto-mounted with the exception of blank media and audio-CDs.

Same problem here - a physical Karmic machine (upgraded from Jaunty). Audio CDs do mount automatically. DVDs and data CDs do not mount automatically. However I can mount from the command line and use the DVDs fine.

It all worked fine under Jaunty. Output of lshw attached.

Changing to devicekit-disks as hal is deprecated in Karmic and devicekit-disks is replacing it.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KarmicKoala/TechnicalOverview#hal deprecation for notes.

I should also say that mounting USB media works fine (USB disk, camera over USB). Is that the same for other people on this bug?

Yep. USB media work fine over here too.

The problem was not resolved with the alpha 6 of Ubuntu 9.10, but after a normal update this morning the cdrom was automatically mounted as it should be.

In that case this bug does not describe my problem. I *CAN* mount many CDs and DVDs. Is it possible to decouple my original bug report (425393) from this one? (It was flagged as a dupe of this one).

CDs and DVDs mount and eject but only once. And after that I can't open the drive tray with the eject button on the drive panel.

Maybe in the meantime you can just kill nautilus

The original problem reported here was bug 431055 which has been fixed for 10 days now.

The non-working eject button is covered in bug 397734.

nautilus usually displays the file contents, so you need to close the windows, or use the eject symbol in nautilus, or use "eject -m /dev/dvd".
