Since todays update (update.out) gdm / X fails to start on my Lenovo Thinkpad T400s

I don't see anything suspicious in Xorg.0.log. It looks like xorg itself starts fine, but that the programs that that is spawned then has problems. According to https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus there has been a lot of updates to dbus over the last days (and also to gdm). Has anything changed over the last days? Maybe you can try to downgrade to 1.2.16-0ubuntu2. There are still debs available for your architecture from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/1.2.16-0ubuntu2 , but they will be automatically removed soon.

Also, could you upload the gdm log files from /var/log/gdm, since there may be some error messages there.

Thank you for letting us know that it is now resolved. It might have been that two packages that needed to be upgraded simultaneously got out of sync for a moment.
