Bug Description

Installing Karmic Koala Netbook Remix Alpha 5 to an external USB hard drive connected to an Asus EEE PC 701 renders the computer unusable: it will not boot the live CD. When I chose to install ubuntu on sdb in the guided partitioning I expected the installer NOT to write anything at all to the SILICONMOTION 4GB internal flash drive containing the Xandros linux that shipped with the PC. Instead when I unplugged all USB devices from the EEE PC and tried to boot Xandros I got the screen " GRUB loading, Welcome to GRUB!, Entering Rescue mode, error: no such drive". When I typed help at the GRUB rescue command prompt I saw "Unknown command help. Try help for usage". I then restarted the PC, entered the BIOS with F2 and disable the SILICONMOTION drive. When I restarted I was then able to press ESC and boot the UNR live CD. I then tried the install again and at step 8 clicked Advanced. This revealed a listed of devices to which grub could be written with the default being hd0. I chose the device sdb. The installation was successful.

VERY DANGEROUS OVERWRITES MBR WITHOUT WARNING !!

I installed Karmic Koala Ubunutu 9.10 from the live CD icon on a MACBOOK PRO 13".
I choose to install on and 8GB SD card (sdb) and used "manual partion" to set up sda1 as an ext3
mounted as "/".
Everything went fine until the very end when ubiguity said "installing GRUB on hd(0,0)
(which would be sda the harddrive) wihtout any question.

When i rebooted i could not reboot into OSX. I had to pulls some undocumented OSX
rescue tricks to get my OSX back working. This should never have happend grub should
have been installed on sdb or i schould have been asked.

When I updated to lucid alpha 2 the distribution upgrade did ask me where grub should be written. Problem solved.
