Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

In karmic (with up-to-date packages as of Sep 11 2009), I see the following:

1. Change the desktop background to a plain color, for clarity.
2. Make sure compiz is enabled.
3. Click on the clock applet, to make the 'mini-calendar' window appear below the top panel.
4. Click again to make the calendar go away.

The rectangular shadow of the calendar window remains on the desktop: a dark-grey rectangular outline. I don't know whether to report this against compiz or the clock applet. It seems to be only the clock-applet that has this problem.

Version info:
  gnome-panel 2.27.92-0ubuntu2
  compiz 2.27.92-0ubuntu2

My video driver is: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.8.1-1ubuntu1.

The same problem was reported in the ubuntu forums in this post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7944153&postcount=6

I will attach the screenshot from that forum post.

(Another post in the same thread suggests that it occurs also with ATI and nvidia hardware; but it's not clear that the other poster is referring to this problem. The original subject of that thread is a different problem.)

Hi kronheim,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

I don't have an xorg.conf, but will attach output from dmesg (doesn't seem to contain relevant stuff here), lspci etc.

I also have this problem on a Thinkpad X61 Tablet which also has 965GM graphics.

The shadow goes away when a window is moved over it so that the background has to be repainted. mannheim, can you also confirm this, so that I'm not saying something that is not true for you?

I also once saw the same shadow for the lower taskbar when for some reason it disappeared.

Geir, yes, the shadow is erased when a window moves over it.

This issue seems to affect multiple video drivers with compiz/clock-applet as it is also affecting my test box

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11DDR [GeForce2 MX200] (rev b2)

Does not seem to occur when using metacity.

I also have this issue on my Sony Vaio PCG 3E2L. Fixed if you maximize a window, have a window maximized, or drag a window over it.

Same on IBM T43 with ATI Technologies Inc M22 [Mobility Radeon X300].
This may be a duplicate of #428783? I don't know which one is "right" and which one a "duplicate".
