Bug Description

I attempted to upgrade my Breezy installation to Dapper using "sudo update-manager -d" on Wed May 3rd.

When attempting to install coreutils the upgrade fails with:
Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/coreutils_5.93-5ubuntu3_i386.deb'

The upgrade aborts now. Please report this bug.

subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 2

And in the terminal window:
Preparing to replace coreutils 5.2.1-2ubuntu2 (using .../coreutils_5.93-5ubuntu3_i386.deb) ...
Removing `local diversion of /usr/share/man/man1/md5sum.textutils.1.gz' with
different file `/usr/share/man/man1/md5sum.1.gz', not allowed
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/coreutils_5.93-5ubuntu3_i386.deb

Then later:
Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade aborts now. Your system can be in an unusable state. A recovery was run (dpkg --configure -a).

installArchives() failed

a simple
sudo rm /usr/share/man/man1/md5sum.*
sudo apt-get install coreutils

make coreutils install and complete the upgrade complete. no glitches
discovered after that. i'm now in dapper.

It isn't a issue on dapper->edgy upgrades. But under rare circumstances it happend during breezy->dapper.

in today's updates, a fresh breezy install CAN be updated to dapper without
problems.
and that 'dapper-from-breezy' install can be updated to edgy

at the time of the bug repport, a breezy OS used in everyday work, failed to
update to dapper. i think that possibly a previous update of coreutils (in
breezy everyday updates) broken the package and causes upgrade to dapper to
fail.

this is an old bug and has little feedback. i think that you might close
then as 'not-reproducible' or 'little-incidence' or 'resolved by a new
coreutils update'

Given that breezy has been end-of-lifed for some time now and this bug has not yet been fixed, I think we should be realistic that it isn't going to be in the future either. Marking as 'wontfix'
