Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdm

System Settings -> Login Manager -> Users

The "System UIDs" editboxes contain 1000 and 29999 initially. In the "below" box, remove last 0 (so the contents becomes 100). Now many system users are shown in the list. Put that 0 back, system users are not filtered out. Remove 0, all those system users are added to the list again as duplicates.

Description: KDE Display Manager for X11
KDM manages a collection of X servers running on local or remote machines.
It allows users to easily log into their preferred desktop environment, connect
to a remote XDMCP server, or shut down the system.
 .
KDM supports custom themes and can display a list of users with icons.
Additional user icons can be found in the 'kdepasswd' package.
 .
This package is part of the KDE 4 base workspace module.

I am unable to reproduce this with Karmic and KDE 4.3.1. I am attaching a screenshot as proof. Do you still get this issue with the newer releases?

Yes, I still can reproduce it - with freshly updated packages. Note that to
reproduce it you need to repeat the actions described above more than once
(after 1st repetition you'll have system users added once, even though they
are not removed).

So, to reproduce:
- Open System Settings -> Login Manager
- Check that "Inverse selection" is checked; System UIDs: Below is set to
1000.
- Click at the end of "System UIDs: Below" editbox
- Hit backspace; you'll notice more users added to the list
- Press '0'; you'll notice that the system users added at the previous step
are not removed - even though "System UIDs: Below" now contains 1000 as it was
before.
- Hit backspace, press '0'. You'll notice a second copy of all system users
added.
- Hit backspace, press '0'; third copy is added
- ...

Regards,
Alexey.

I appreciate the clarification and the steps involved to recreate it. You are correct. I just did it about 20 times and had 20 duplicates. I will check upstream and see if I can find any reports of this. If not, I will create a report. Thanks again!

Filed an upstream report and attached it to this report. At this time I was unable to reach anyone on IRC to attempt to replicate the issue with either another distro or with a trunk build, so hopefully someone does soon. Thanks!

When changing the UID 'Below' setting in the Login Manager under System Settings causes duplicate users. To reproduce, do the following:

1) System Settings -> Advanced -> Login Manager
2) Go to the Users tab
3) In the box 'System UIDs' there is a 'Below' text box, place mouse cursor at the end of the text (default is 1000)
4) Backspace one time (list on the right for users and groups should expand to match results
5) Add the '0' back making it 1000 again - users didn't go away from previous step (bug 1)
6) Remove backspace again making the number 100 - user/group list duplicates pretty much everything (bug 2)

If you continue removing and adding the 0, the list keeps duplicating.

kdm reached it's end of life with Plasma 4, whose last bugfix release was last August 2015, we are sorry we did not get to fix this bug.

We encourage you to try Plasma 5 and its recommended display manager SDDM and it's control module kcm_ssdm.

And please do not hesitate to file bugs against it if you find any.

Sorry again we could not fix your bug.
