virutal console 1-6 are black with no display

Ubuntu Hardy Heron LTS with all updates applied. Running NVIDIA driver.
I know this is fixed in the later releases but I want to stick with LTS releases only.

CTRL-ALT-F1 thru F6 are black

I have performed a clean install of 8.04.3 LTS and performed all updates without installing the NVIDIA graphics driver and tty1 thru tty6 are fine now. Once I install the NVIDIA driver though I am sure they will be black again. How would you go about installing the latest driver from the NVIDIA website to see if it is just a driver version issue? You have to stop the X Server. I am guessing going to an init level to shut down X.

There should be instructions on the NVIDIA website about doing that.
