Thanks for supplying a patch.
Currently I can't reproduce the crash. Are there some special things I need to take care of? What distro are you running?

I'm running Gentoo.
Here's output of unpatched version:

$ shutter --window

INFO: checking installed components...

Argument "\n" isn't numeric in kill at ./shutter line 6052.
User defined signal 2

$ shutter --full

INFO: checking installed components...

Argument "\n" isn't numeric in kill at ./shutter line 6062.
User defined signal 1

When these commands are used in GNOME key bindings and no Shutter instance is running GNOME session crashes and restart.
