sound not working ubuntu 9.04 ES1869 - ESS AudioDrive ES1869

2009-09-13, sound works fine under windows 2000, so hardware failure is not the case.

I'm trying to record sound using the soundrecorder, but it doesn't work. Pressing the record button twice causes the application to hang.

I try to play sound using the Listen Music player, and the Movie player, but no sound. I try to play an mp3. I have tried using the ubuntu volume control, alsamixer, and xfce4-mixer to change the volumes. It doesn't help.

I had sound working before summer, but I think maybe one of the (kernel) updates has made it stop working. I can't go back to an older kernel as I had to remove them because of a small boot partition.

I've added to /etc/modules
# sound card ESS ES1869
snd-es18xx

because it won't autodetect.

I've tried the tips on the link, but no luck there.

In aMSN I get sound when using the "configure sound settings" and choose plughw:0 instead of default.
