Bug Description

Binary package hint: jockey-gtk

When running the Hardware Drivers program, it fails to install the Broadcom STA proprietary drivers. I can select the driver, but when I go to click the activate button, I authenticate and then the "Downloading and Installing drivers" or whatever dialog pops up for the briefest of seconds (to the point that I can't read the message). Once it has disappeared, I am returned to the dialog to choose which driver to install and the driver is not installed. I'm running the alpha 5 Karmic release.

Here's the apt-cache policy report for my version:

jockey-gtk:
  Installed: 0.5.3-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.5.3-0ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 0.5.3-0ubuntu3 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

As a result the only way I can connect to the network is via a plugged in ethernet cable. Thank you.

EDIT: I should also add that it worked fine in the live CD and installed the driver, the only problem being that at bug #409166. The fact that it worked is what prompted me to install to the HDD.

EDIT 2: I just removed the bcmwl-kernel-source package ($ sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source) and it must've fetched the drivers from the internet this time. The program acted as expected and installed the drivers, even showing the correct "drivers correctly installed" message. If anyone else is having a similar problem, this would be my advice to resolve the problem, but it's a bit of a hack really.

Same problem on a Macbook 5,5 but worked on a previous Macbook 5,5 that I loaded on the weekend. I suspect it was because the PC hung during the enabling of the Broadcom STA. I've attached /var/log/jockey.log.

I recently updated everything using the karmic-backports and everything seems to work as well, no hacking required
