Bug Description

I could use the Koala Karmic until Alpha 3 version. After an update around 2 or 3 September and could not return to the desktop. At the password screen, write the password, but could not enter, the screen stayed black and went back to the password screen.
Until then everything worked, except 3D acceleration graphics card. The "Palimset" constantly told me that one of my hard drives is damaged, something also happened when I used the Fedora Live disk but the disk is working properly. The same indication of failed hard drive, I get an Acer Aspire One mini laptop where if I could get into the meeting with the desktop version of KK Alpha 5. Moreover Alpha 3 version worked properly.

Now with the Alpha 5 version, I can not enter the desktop using the Live CD, the system freezes on the startup screen, using the version of 32bit and 64bit, in the two is the same. It freezes the screen and the system does not boot.
I have not installed the Alpha 5 version because it probably occurs as with the Live Cd.

Here is frozen:

Ubuntu 9.04 works correctly until today.

No desktop after logging in.

All was fine with Karmic Alpha 4 until after a regular update (beginning of September, so before the release the Alpha 5) I was not able to reach my desktop any more. After logging in the screen went black for a few seconds (as usual) but instead of my desktop, the login screen appeared again. I've tried Alpha 5 now but the same happens. I can only use Alpha 4 with no updates.

I'm using a Sony Vaio VGN-SR29VN (i could repeat the same problem on another laptop of exactly this same type)

I have a similar issue.. From login screen I can book to xterm, but not to gnome. If I try gnome, the system returns to the login screen. It is recognizing my password, and it will log me into an xterm window. amd turion, 4 GB ram, ATI Radeon Mobility, atheros wirless, but does the same if I have a wired connection... I have run apt-get update to make sure I have the most current patches, but still not working.. Alpha 4 was no problem.

I'm running latest Karmic. Did an upgrade last week and all was well.

Upgraded today and I get a blank screen.

I booted from CD and took our 'quiet splash' from /etc/default/grub, ran update-grub and rebooted.

Boot process completes and it appears as soon as the desktop starts the screen goes black.

Someone please post the key sequence I can hit during boot to start a command line shell, rather than start a desktop.

Thanks.

I confirm that after upgrading to latest Karmik Koala (September 15, 2009) my system stops booting. Kernel is 2.6.31-10-generic. I've tried to boot in recovery mode, but without success. The last lines in the boot logs are:

Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom
Done.
usb 5-1: configuration #1 choosen from 1 choice

That's all. In this stage my notebook (Asus Eee PC 1000/H) reacts only only on Ctrl+Alt+Del key combination.

I downloaded the Alpha 5 version of Kubuntu and Xubuntu, and with these two, if I get that Live CD from the desktop. In Kubuntu, before entering the desktop, it asks me for username and password, and I can not enter, but if I choose on the menu, the option to install, then if I can. In the Live CD of Xubuntu, entered the live system without any problems. So, I think it should be a problem with the Gnome desktop.

I agree with "tr33m4n" is a Gnome problem.

There seems to be mixed results on whether Alpha 6 has corrected the problem or not.
There is a duplicate bug for this, whose thread states Alpha 6 has fixed the problem, but for my system it does not seem to have been corrected.

Under Alpha 5 I had problems where I would be kicked back to the login after typing in my password. Now with Alpha 6 I currently get a blank black screen after trying to login to gnome. I can successfully login to the xterm session.

My system is:
Computer Model: Dell Studio 1536
Video Card: ATI technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series, 4GB
Subsystem: Dell Device 0255
Operating System: Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 Alpha 6 (AMD64)
CPU: AMD Turion X2 Ultra-Core Mobile ZM-80

Let me know if I can provide any additional information to help track down this issue.

I've tested Alpha 6 live CD (without installation) on my system, but the same problem happens as before: when the desktop should appear, I can hear the welcome tune, but then the screen goes back to the screen. with the Ubuntu logo and the moving white line. Then again the welcome tune starts then it jumps back again and so on until it switch the laptop off.

The last version that ran perfectly was Alpha 4 with NO updates. If I let the update manager update my Alpha 4, then this problem starts.

Btw with Alpha 4 all hardware was working: webcam, bluetooth, wifi, everything out of the box. That's why I bought this laptop.

Thanks!!

Try to download the version with Xubuntu, I that I work, you may go to the desktop, but I have not installed because my computer is shared with Vista and Ubuntu 9.04 and I will not spoil the boot. Kubuntu also works.

I thought maybe I just downloaded/burned the Alpha 6 64-bit CD incorrectly, but I'm experiencing the same issue as hajtipajti reported - it gets to the ubuntu logo with the bouncy/moving white line, plays the startup sound, the screen blacks out, and repeats the process to infinity. This happened both with the live cd and after the install. FYI, i'm testing this on a Dell Studio 1537 and fairly similar hardware to hajtipajti as well: (2 cores) 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 34xx series 256 MB.

Good news!

The problem has disappeared after using today's (21 sept 2009) Live Build from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

With this build I can get to the desktop with no problem. Everything looks fine, though I haven't installed it, just used the Live CD.

Juan, Tormod, I unfortunately didn't try out your solutions.

Thanks for the fix whoever did it!

I have downloaded the daily version, and the problem has been solved. I am new to Ubuntu and not know many things :(, and one that did not know is that there are new versions every day. The Live CD works correctly now, but I can not install because my system is shared with Vista and Ubuntu 9.04 (9.04 works well) and do not want to spoil the Grub.
Thank you very much.
