Open with dialog to display programs

Bug Description

I didn't see any bugs specifically addressing this point.

The open with dialog should show programs by their common (Menu) names, not just open to a file directory screen.

I'm fairly fluent with linux, but even I can never remember if the program I want to open this file with is in /bin, /usr/bin etc. Also since the command line names are often not very intuitive, I sometimes know the program I want to open it in, but don't even know the actual command name.

Example evince for PDF Reader.

Basically If I have trouble finding the programs I need to open a file with the open with dialog, I can't imagine what a new user must think when they just get a directory listing.

At the very least having it open in /usr/bin by default would allow people to have half a chance at finding the program they need.

The way you expect the Open with to behave is already implemented...

Attaching a screenshot of the open with , If you do not see that window , It seems you are facing a bug.

Ahh, It does work when you use nautilus. I was mistaken about when it happens.

It happens when you download a file with firefox and choose to Open the file in the download window. I suppose that is a Firefox issue then? If that's the case I guess I should go give the Mozilla people a ribbing about it.

It still seems like a papercut no matter what though because I'd imagine most people, like me, would rather just click open than to open up the folder and then click on it.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu 9.10 install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

-The issue you report is a firefox specific issue and arises only when new unknown file types are downloaded , which is not very common. When a know file type is downloaded it only shows an option "Open". This bug does not affect the majority of avverage users , and hence not a papercut.
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the papercuts project.
