ubuntu karmic development kernel does not include patch to enable buttons on stylus for the N-Trig digitizer

With the current Karmic development kernel (2.6.31-10.32-generic), the buttons on my stylus of the N-Trig digitizer of my tablet PC (Dell Latitude XT 2) do not work.

The upstream kernel is already patch against the needed 0001-ntrig-tool-separation-and-pen-usages patch from http://ofb.net/~rafi/latitude_xt.html.

I have applied this patch to the Karmic kernel sources and everything works fine.

Please include the patch (as does the vanilla kernel) in the final Karmic version.

Indeed this seems to be upstream. Unfortunately we're nearing Karmic kernel freeze so only likely critical bug fixes at this point are likely to get in. This may have to wait for Lucid. An immediate alternative though would be to run one of the latest mainline daily kernels which should already include this patch. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds . Thanks.

The N-trig digitizer is being built into more and more tablets/notebooks (Dell Latitude XT, Latitude XT2, HP TouchSmart TX2, Lenovo Thinkpad T400s and X200t, etc.). There is no reason why Ubuntu shouldn't work out of the box with all these notebooks.

Using the mainline daily kernels is not really an option for those who expect their Ubuntu to work without installing additional deb archives and for those who need the patched Ubuntu kernels (as opposed to mainline kernels) for some other reason.

Thus I strongly vote for including the bug fix in the Ubuntu kernel. Also because the patch has been in use for some time now (including a couple of Ubuntu users) and I am not aware of any complaints about it.
