We need some more information about your system before we can proceed. WhT version of Ubuntu are you using?

If you are using Ubuntu 9.04 or newer, please run the following command in a terminal: "apport-collect -p alsa-base 427670" which will give us everything we need to know.

Both of these laptops have node 0x0f as line-out instead of hp, which Karmic's driver does not enable for jack sensing. The latest changesets in my git branch (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=dtchen/ubuntu-karmic.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/lp400682) address this issue.

I'll have kernels built by Monday EDT for testing.

I just got a confirmation of this bug in Jaunty.
Bug #346323 has a solution (but different sound card): Install Alsa Driver v. 1.0.20 from source.
Will try to test karmic (which includes alsa-driver-1.0.20) to see if it has been fixed.

I have the same problem on an HP dv6 1030-ef. The sound does not work on the live CD. I have reported a new bug using the system-testing application. #447796.

I have manage to get around this issue in with Ubuntu 9.04 the methodology is documented here : #363870
It is far from optimal but it is the best I have been able to get. I am crossing my fingers that this problem will be fixed before 9.10 get out of its beta mode.

Thank you for your help.

Jaunty; I was able to get sound only using latest ALSA driver Snapshot, compiled & installed by myself. Worked ok with older kernels ok. New kernels: Can not get sound from Totem & Rhytnbox, other sounds ok. Not recommended solution, will brake always when ever a kernel update happens.

Karmic Koala: Just installed, no sound, Not yet test with latest ALSA driver Snapshot, I hope problem can be addressed by Ubuntu developers (ALSA update).

For your information:
Temporary solution I used also for Karmic is compiling & installing ALSA drivers Snapshot from here:

   http://www.alsa-project.org/snapshot/

only "alsa-driver" package from that.

Here are versions I curretly have:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10
Codename: karmic
Kernel: 2.6.31-16-generic
Bit amount: 64 bits

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.39.g96197.445.gc31ad.
Compiled on Dec 9 2009 for kernel 2.6.31-16-generic (SMP).

Remaining problems for that temporary fix are
1) Hard "click" sound when logging off
2) Kernel updates will brake it

amendra_fer, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
