Sorry I don't even know what dapper beta is? This is my forst atempt at linux based software.

The lap top currently has Windows 98 installed and I left that in place as the instructions said that all the existign software would be remove by the default installation .. which was fine by me.

Dapper is the next version of Ubuntu - Currently it is at beta 2. YOu
can download CD images for it from cdimage.ubuntu.com

Can confirm similar behaviour (complete machine lockup) with Xubuntu (i.e. Dapper) Daily May 18th.

Using Thinkpad X22 with Window 2000 Pro (fat32) and external USB CD/DVD drive.

'Live CD' boots and appears to run OK. Had problems with partioner - it would not resize partion (/dev/hda1).I dropped to command line and ran parted manually to resize partion. Copied/moved data OK and then locked up machine.

Since then everytime I attempt to enter the 'manuall edit partition table' stage of the installer I get the same (complete) lockup. This also happens on the command line with cfdisk and parted.

Windows still runs and sees the reduce partion size of 2GByte.

Using a different live CD (DSL based) I can happily run cfdisk to create/delete partions.

Strangely cfdisk shows a '0.04GByte' free space before the Windows partion.

Partion information, read by booting into DSL Live CD.

Hi.
I managed to get Xubuntu installed (without problems) by moving the harddisk to a desktop machine. When the disk was replaced into laptop the installed system suffers from complete lockups.

Not sure what is triggering them, will try more testing over the weekend.

I continued to get random lockups over the weekend with no specific cause.... these did not occur in 'Safe' (console) mode.

So I switched xservers (from 'ati' to 'vesa') using 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg'. Since the switch I have not had any lockups.

This is not a real solution, but heh its a good workaround. Just strange that the original lockups always appear to happen at the same place in the install process.

Hi,
I tried to install the most recent Version of XUbuntu ( 8.04) – like Stephen on an old IBM Think Pad, and I experienced the same problem he had with version 5.10.
After choosing "manual" in the partition menue the installation stops at 40%.
The logfile partman shows the correct partitioning of the disk though.

Does anyone have an update on this issue?

Thanks
Susanne
