Bug Description

The message to "explore while installing" in the Karmic Alpha 5 installer slideshow gives the impression that you should be able to use the system while it is installing. This line should be changed or removed to avoid confusion.

Thanks for the bug report, Roy. When I wrote that, I was actually meaning precisely what you see. This is definitely quite possible on a reasonably efficient computer, and as far as stability is concerned I for one have never really encountered problems. Still, you make a good point; this is something that COULD backfire, and we don't want any of that.

I intend to rewrite that slide (regardless of where the other content goes) since it is really horribly terse right now, so this will get fixed.
Any suggestions for how it could be better worded?

Maybe the point here is that you can only explore while installing if you started ubiquity from the desktop icon; if you selected "Install Ubuntu" from the boot menu, then you can't really.

Marking as confirmed, given Colin's point about not being able to explore the live CD when in the "install Ubuntu" session.

Hi Dylan

I stand corrected... kind of. :o)

I haven't installed Ubuntu from the Desktop icon since my first install
of Feisty and I forgot that what you say *is* possible until I was
reminded by Colin's reply.
The only thing I can think of in this case is to set a flag depending on
where the install was started from, then displaying one of 2 slides with
or without the "explore" line. If this proves to be too time consuming a
fix my feeling is that it would be better to drop the line altogether.
From my experience, that may or may not be typical, the person most
likely to use this feature is a first time user. Since the explore only
works from the desktop install icon, and then only if a person's
computer is fast enough, there is too much room for confusion that could
poison a first impression of Ubuntu. I think most people will, as I
did, try the Live CD session, then not worry about it after the install
has started.

My 2 cents,
  Roy

P.S.
A possibility is to change the line to something like -
"If you started the install from the Desktop then you can continue
exploring Ubuntu during the install."

Maybe we should disable hyperlinks in case user is in only install mode, cause clicking on not working links are annoying also.

I'd like to point out also that on the 9.10 RC, at least for the french version, the hyperlinks provided for community end up with "" in the http address which causes the browser beeing unable to resolve the url.

Anyway, if this possiblity has been left out for the release it's not a problem. But if the links still exist, this should be double checked.

BTW: I've got a problem with the welcome text. Why talking about money in the very first sentence ? The main thing is about freedom, so the end of it should read : we believe that .... without beeing tied by the licence. instead of without having to pay for the license.

Hi Michel,

The translations were not updated for the release candidate, but Evan made a release (10) earlier today with the latest translations (and they are really finely done). This will land in the final release and the daily builds, or the latest slides can be viewed if you install ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu. (Just ask me directly if you want directions on that).

You can also see a build from just a tiny bit earlier here: http://l10n.ubuntu.tla.ro/ubuntu-karmic-ubiquity-slideshow/langs.html

Personally, I don't think the welcome text sounds like it is talking about money. "Free" there is not just talking about downloading, but about sharing, changing and studying, too!

Anyway, these sorts of discussions really belong on the mailing lists or (at least) separate bug reports. This one has been dealt with for a long time :)
