Bug Description

Binary package hint: foomatic-db

Since installing Karmic alpha-4 no more support for Samsung ML-1640 laser printer (USB). It was present in Jaunty, but - alas - no more. Only way to fix was to install the proprietary driver from Samsung, which is very tedious.

Do you have the "splix" package installed ("dpkg -l | grep splix")?

Does the file

/usr/share/ppd/splix/samsung/ml1640.ppd

exist on your system?

Yes.

Still, when trying to find (add) that printer under (Kubuntu)
"Printer configuration" it does not show. In fact, no USB printers
listed.

But then again, could it be due to the proprietary driver from
Samsung now installed? (it works well).

So problem is not a missing driver or PPD file but the printer not being detected. Then it is a known problem. Please do a full update to get the latest CUPS version.
