Bug Description

Binary package hint: grub2

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release: 9.10

$ apt-cache policy grub2

grub2 hangs with "Welcome to grub" on a eeepc 1101ha. Also, after installing grub2 to /dev/sda (instead of chainloading), restored (and reinstalled a few times) grub won't work if I have a uuid line for each entry. It will hang, only booting if I replace the uuid entry with "root (hd0,4)".

Output of "fdisk -l"

I've tried today, with the latest karmic updates, and the result is still the same, grub2 hangs. All I get is a screen with ", bss=0x0Welcome to grub" at the left hand top, and then nothing. Am I the only eeepc user with this problem?

Have you tried grub i386 packages? I experience another problem with grub2 on my asus eee 1000h (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/444562) - here i386 packages work fine but lpia packages don't.

I'll check. But I think it might be related to the eeePC hd geometry - after all grub 1.x hangs also if I set the groot with a uuid and not a dev string.

Did you try to update your BIOS. I'm using the latest version 0323 ... and I've no problems with grub2.

Basically, I gave up. I repartitioned the disk without the recovery and the EF partition, and now grub2 doesn't hang anymore.

karmic is no longer supported and receives no further updates. At your discretion, please reopen this ticket or create a new one if you experience this problem in a more recent, supported release.

We apologize we were unable to deal with the issue you were experiencing in a better, more timely manner.
