Bug Description

I'm using the latest dapper kernel and the fan never goes off, no matter the 80% idle cpu, the powersave governor and the 36°C that acpi -t report.

It used to work in breezy and with dapper until 1 or 2 weeks ago

Please this is HIGHLY annoying.

The newer ThinkPads (and HPs) have the fan running pretty much continously when running on battery. Is it just the difference between AC power and being on Battery?

Are there any messages in:

  /var/log/messages

relating to ACPI, 'thermal' or 'fan' modules?

Same thing happens on T42; Ubuntu version: 7.04.
/var/log/messages says nothing interesting about it.
About thermal, only this:
>>kernel: [ 14.389499] ACPI: Thermal Zone [THM0] (41 C)
sort of things appears, I think it does on startup.

No records on "fan".

Same problem on Acer TM8204, Intel Centrino Duo. The fan starts at maximum speed after 10 minutes of use and then won't stop until shutdown or reboot. No matter of CPU utilization or AC/battery power.
/proc/acpi/fan/ is empty, CPU throttling seems not to do anything:
# acpi -t
     Battery 1: charging, 43%, 00:03:18 until charged
     Thermal 1: ok, 87.0 degrees C

Just adding a note that I'm reassigning the Ubuntu Hardy kernel source package from 'linux-source-2.6.24' to just 'linux'. Beginning with the Hardy release the package naming convention changed from linux-source-2.6.x to just linux. Sorry for any confusion.

Hi Giovanni,

I just realized you have a different set of hardware than the original bug reporter. Care to open a new bug report with the information requested. Also, the original bug reporter commented that this is no longer an issue. Thanks!
