As of Sept. 4th, Karmic Alpha 5 just released, when starting empathy, it shows the contact list for a couple of seconds and then crashes with Segmentation fault (core dumped).

I can confirm this crash. This also happens to me whenever empathy tries to connect to a network. I cannot see the contact list, though. StacktraceTop looks exactly the same on my crash
