Binary package hint: libgl1-mesa-dri
Upgrading current karmic to the newest xorg-edgers packages this morning brought in among others:
libgl1-mesa-dri_7.6.0+git20090902.dc9de806-0ubuntu0tormod.
The upgrade of this package resulted in visual problems with some buttons not showing up in blender until mouse over and some buttons disappearing on mouse over as the attached video shows.
Forcing libgl1-mesa-dri down to the current karmic (7.6.0~git20090817.7c422387-0ubuntu3) worked and made all those visual problems go away.
Further investigation showed that it is the update of libgl1-mesa-dri from 7.6.0+git20090901.a8cbb156-0ubuntu0tormod to 7.6.0+git20090902.dc9de806-0ubuntu0tormod that introduces this bug. this is btw. the same update that fixed bug #423047 "xorg-edgers regression: screen corruption in blender".
I have discovered another visual phenomenon that coincides with the non-showing buttons. In blenders outliner window some icons are offset by one. See http://launchpadlibrarian.net/31478830/outliner_correct.ogv for the correct behaviour (as happens with libgl1-mesa-dri forced down to current karmic) and http://launchpadlibrarian.net/31478848/outliner_offsetbug.ogv for what happens with current xorg-edgers libgl1-mesa-dri.
A new update of xorg-edgers installed 7.7.0~git20090909.4d85a6b3-0ubuntu0tormod. This did not change the bugs status.
Please let me know what else I can do to make ubuntu karmic on intel graphics a good platform for blender :-)

Some buttons not showing up in blender until mouse over and some buttons disappearing on mouse over as the attached video blenderSep3.ogv shows.
This regression happened between commits a8cbb156 and dc9de806 mesa master. That is from one xorg-edgers daily checkout (20090901) to the next (20090902) and the best I can do to pinpoint it.
I have discovered another visual phenomenon that seems to coincide with the non-showing buttons. In blenders outliner window some icons are offset by one. See http:// launchpadlibrar ian.net/ 31478830/ outliner_ correct. ogv for the correct behaviour and http:// launchpadlibrar ian.net/ 31478848/ outliner_ offsetbug. ogv for the wrong behaviour. I can however not pinpoint when this other phenomenon showed up with the same precision. They might not be the same bug.
I filed this bug first on launchpad: /bugs.launchpad .net/ubuntu/ +source/ mesa/+bug/ 423624

There is a lot of logs attached there. I do not know if any of those might be useful.
