I expected the package to be upgraded and the game to work

The upgrade procedure (from 8.10 to 9.04) told me that there was a problem and that i should run "dpkg -a --configure"
It does not seem to work.
Re installing through synaptic gives the following output:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we are unable to examine your VarLogDistupgrade log file as it is corrupted. Could you please manually add the log files in '/var/log/dist-upgrade' to this bug report? This will allow us to better determine what went wrong with this package installation.
