FFe rationale can be found on azureus changelog:

2009.08.27 | Vuze 4.2.0.8

FEATURE: Core | Drive Detection for Devices for OSX (for PSP devices) [TuxPaper]
FEATURE: Core | Factory option to allow switchable unchoke algorithms [Parg]

CHANGE: UI | Less CPU usage for Seeding Rules [TuxPaper]
CHANGE: Core | Only create the transcode directories when required [Parg]
CHANGE: Core | Allow OSX platform component to be updated properly [Parg]

BUGFIX: UI | Fixed Speedtest not working [TuxPaper]
BUGFIX: UI | OSX 10.6 support (opening torrent from file) [TuxPaper]
BUGFIX: Core | OSX 10.6 support (not getting data from connected peers) [Parg]
BUGFIX: Core | Fixed deadlock during UI initialisation [Parg]

I think this should be synced, therefore I'm subscribing motu-release to process this.

This sync requires an FFe. Please take a look at this link for more informations:

requestsync does its work properly. But from what I see:
1. you subscribed ubuntu-archive which is wrong
2. we are under FF, so the bug title (you choose) is wrong
3. you didnt wait for an ~ubuntu-dev member to process the sync

Would you mind moving this to a FFe? if not, I gonna take care of having it done.

What testing have you done with this new version? As a note, requestsync has a -e option for use after Feature Freeze to subscribe the relevant -release team.

I've tested the package on karmic and everything seems to work properly:

1. speed test (just fixed in this release) works fine
2. check for updates plus updates installations are doing their work
3. in general, the whole bittorrent client is having the right behaviour while downloading / uploading .torrent files

Does this mean it downloads updates to itself from outside the archive?

@Scott,

AFAIK core updates are disabled by default in Debian/Ubuntu package. The update mechanism works only for plugins. These plugins are installed in home directory.
Adrian is in better position to answer all the queries related to this topic.

@Scott,

yes, there is a feature inside that allows you to update azureus plugins (azureus is having this behaviour since a lot of releases, so this is not a *new* feature). But as Onkar said those core-updates are disabled in both Debian / Ubuntu packaging. (anyway they install everything into user's $HOME, so nothing will be installed randomly inside the system)

Under 3.0.1.6 changelog's entry (dated 2007) I see:

# UI | Option to auto-download and install updates

So, again, this is not a new feature at all. I remember using it in past versions of azureus (vuze) without having any problem. (e.g they were not disabled)

As I replied to the bug Onkar forwarded me, since azureus 4.2.0.4-1 I
disabled core azureus updates that compromise sync with the debian
archive and/or the package management system. Currently, this components
are:
* Core Updates: (Since 4.2.0.4-1) This updates the azureus core, I mean,
the azureus jar file and other files for a new version. This must only
be achieved through a package manager update.
* Core Patcher: (Since 4.2.0.8-1). This component is the responsible of
doing the update itself.
* SWT Libraries: (Since 4.2.0.4-1) The Standard Widget Toolkit Java
libraries. This should be updated either since there's the swt-gtk
package which includes the libraries in debian. Also, in my progress
with eclipse, there's 3.5 (not released yet). Azureus has worked for me
with both versions (the swt-gtk one: currently 3.4.2, and the
eclipse-dev one: 3.5.0), no need to update them from azureus, since
it'll break a lot of things (in the remote case it succeeds with the
update).
Hope that makes some clearance.
My best thoughts and feedback is welcome!

azureus users usally want to be up to date, +1 from me, confirming the FFe. Please also make sure that vuze still works after the upgrade. Thanks.
