Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I'm using Karmic in a virtual machine on an Ubuntu 9.04 host.
When I start update-manager and press Tab twice, the "check" button is highlighted. If I press Enter, it closes update-manager. Same thing happens if I use the Tab key to go to the "settings" button and press Enter.
If I use the space bar to activate the highlighted button, it works as expected.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Could you please run update-manager from a terminal and attach the output there when it closes?

Hi Michael,
When I run update-manager from the terminal I immediately get this output:

oren@lucky:~$ update-manager
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/UpdateManager/SimpleGtkbuilderApp.py:35: RuntimeWarning: missing handler 'on_button_fetch_cancel_clicked'
  self.builder.connect_signals(self)
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/UpdateManager/SimpleGtkbuilderApp.py:35: RuntimeWarning: missing handler 'on_expander_details_activate'
  self.builder.connect_signals(self)

when it closes I don't get any other output, no matter if it closes itself or if I close it using Space or the mouse.

I just noticed different behavior now: the button it automatically activates upon pressing Enter has changed from Close to Install Updates. Maybe it's because update list is populated now. I'll install the updates and see if it changes.

OK, looks like I picked the wrong time to update. My system won't even get to the login menu now, looks like many people are having problems today:

I'll try again when the dust settles :)

I had to reinstall Karmic. I still have the bug as described in the original report. However, when I start update-manager from the terminal I don't get any error message.

Confirming that keyboard navigation with TAB, although the buttons change in highlighting, won't change focus away from 'Close' in a newly-opened Update Manager dialog box if the Enter/Return key is used to choose the action.
That the space bar will choose the changed focus.
That no error messages are dumped when terminal is used to open Update Manager
And that mousing works fine.

I started testing Lucid and this bug is still there. I removed the [Karmic] tag I originally added to the title of the bug report.

I'm not a programmer so I could be wrong about this, but this bug looks like a real low-hanging fruit.

summary: - [Karmic] pressing Enter on any button closes update-manager
+ Pressing Enter on any button closes update-manager

I get the same problem if I try to edit locations in the clock applet, filed a bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/529233
Could both bugs be a result of one underlying problem?

Also affects 11.04.
Running update-manager in terminal shows nothing about the error.
