Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

It happens to me quite often in Karmic (Firefox 3.5) that tabs get detached easily and are transferred into a new window. All I do is just move the mouse over some tabs and maybe move the mouse somewhere near the panel. It seems that this easily triggers detaching of the tab. I think that's not such a good idea, especially since it's not so easy to have them merged again.

How about switching off this functionality (moving a tab to panel detaches it) by default? After all there is a right-click dialog that does the same.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one until you find the problematic one.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:
firefox -ProfileManager

@Micah: thanks for your response. The reason why tabs sometimes detach accidentally for me is because sometimes the pointer is in a "bad state": I move it over the tab and it's like you click-and-hold over the tab (even though the mouse is not clicked). Then I accidentally move it towards the panel and boom! The tab is now in a new window. I cannot really fully explain how that can happen but I definitely have that problem since upgrading to 3.5 and never had it in 3.0.

I tried a little testing and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with add-ons.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.04). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect 421075, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
