Hmm..saving to /root allows the file to be saved. This looks like more of a problem with gksudo.

0.99.0 still has this problem...
does someone know how this could be worked around?
I don't see why ethereal wouldn't have permissions to write in $HOME if it runs as root

im increasing the severety because i try to convert my friends at school to dapper, but if one of our main tools we use at school does not work, its going to be very hard

Looks the Ethereal save the current tracing as /tmp/etherxxx (owner root since Ethereal is running with sudo, but access is 600).

I try to 'sudo chmod 666 /tmp/ether*'
then
mv or cp still fails. but 'sudo mv' could move the trace file to my saving dir.

I've tried recreating this bug with Oneiric and was unable to, given the information you've provided. Please either a) upgrade and test or b) increase the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again.

Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.
