Closing Notebook lid doesn't switch desktop on external monitor

Bug Description
When i close the lid of my DELL 9300 laptop the external monitor doesen't auto activate (like in Windows XP or Mac OSX).
Even when i boot with the closed lid, i can only see the ubuntu boot screen but when gnome is loaded my external monitor switchs off.
