Bug Description

Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings

Since the last default settings have been applied:

kubuntu-default-settings (1:9.10.16) karmic; urgency=low

  [ Jonathan Riddell ]
  * Change kopete settings for message indicator, add kopete.notifyrc
    and hide systray in kopeterc

the main kopete window disappears when I click the close button (x). Since the new settings, the systray icon is hidden, but there is nothing in the message indicator. And no way to restore the main window.

Why hide the systray icon?

Well, using the indicator applet, the system tray icon is not needed to indicate new messages anymore. But the tray icon also serves to open the main window of kopete if the application had been minimized.

I'd say there are two things: firstly, there is probably a bug in kopete. It should not hide the main window if the system tray icon is not activated.
Secondly, if the indicator applet is used, then the system tray icon should only serve to open the main window but not show new messages.

Well, the indicator widget should be added via the default settings (one thing more using up space in my panel :-( )

After the latest updates to kopete and kde-pim packages (including the indicator libs), I understand now why the system tray icon is generally not needed any more. Even if there are no messages to indicate, the indicator widget shows e.g. kmail or kopete if it's running. And selecting this entry brings the application into focus. So basically, the system tray icon is not necessary to bring the main application window into focus.

But it does not work as intended at the moment (that's why I linked the indicator widget to this report). When the application (I tested it with kopete and kmail) is not only minimized to the panel but minimized to the system tray (so that there is no entry in the task manager), then the indicator widget is not able to bring the application into focus.

summary: - kopete window disappears
+ indicator widget cannot show applications which are minimized to system
+ tray
