Keypresses repeated profusely or sometimes ignored

Bug Description

In the Dapper beta release, keypresses on my keyboard are occasionally (perhaps once every few seconds) ignored. The expected character is not echoed to the screen.

More seriously, with about equal frequency, the last keypress may be repeated up to several hundred times at extremely high speed, echoed to the screen (and acted on in the case of hotkeys used to control programs) accordingly, and cause absolute havoc with actually trying to use the computer.

These symptoms occur under X in both GNOME and KDE, but do not occur when Ubuntu is booted in "recovery mode" in console mode (nor when other OSes are booted on the computer).

I upgraded to Dapper from Breezy via the internet using the "update-manager -d" technique described in the Wiki.

My keyboard is a plain vanilla (no fancy multimedia keys, etc) PS/2 keyboard (US layout) which has never given me any problems before.

Workaround for this problem: I completely wiped out (retaining /home) and then reinstalled the OS from scratch from the Dapper-beta CD, and the problem did not occur in this instance.

I have no idea why the problem occurred when upgrading in-place from a live installed system.
