This package is for realplayer 8 which is no longer available. There is a more current package for HelixPlayer that should replace this package. The newer packages are now named "realplay" instead of this package's name. I'll try to get a UVF exception request together for this.

Archive team, please remove this package from the archive.

Is Helix Player actually a sufficient replacement for RealPlayer? I thought it didn't contain the proprietary codecs, which are the main reason people often reach for RealPlayer.

Colin,
You're right...RealPlayer and HelixPlayer are not the same thing, my comment above is incorrect. What I should have said is that the package this bug refers to is for assisting in the install of RealPlayer 8, which is no longer available from Real. The only players available now are RealPlayer 10 and HelixPlayer 2.0. I still believe that this package should be removed from the Ubuntu archive.

I have to agree with Benjiman. This package is gone in Debian too.

Can it be updated to install Real Player 10 instead?

There are other packages for the newer versions of realplayer. This package should be removed from the archive.

Searching packages.ubuntu.com doesn't yield me any other packages that install a version of Real Player newer than 8. Could you tell me which package(s) you're referring to?

Unfortunately, Helix Player does not work with e.g The Australian ABC video news online ( ttp://www.abc.net.au/vod/news ) There's an error about failed transport that I wasn't able to fix.

Don't get me wrong but I'd like to drop it too but there isn't a Free alterntive yet.

I also see that EasyUbuntu will install RealPlayer but I'm not sure how well it works for installing/configuring remote machines via SSH (I support an Internet Cafe)

I was refering to Helix.

A potential solution to your issue is in the README.Debian file in the package:

"There is still a good chance that the newer RPM will work, in such case you
should rename the RPM you downloaded to the name that this installer wants."

The installer is looking for a file called: rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2_rpm. I haven't tried this, but I thought it might help. I did a quick search on google and found a couple of guides on installing realplayer. Mostly they consist of converting the realplayer RPM to a .deb using alien.

I had trouble with the rpm previously, however, I did just discover that you need to run a postint.sh script that will setup the symlinks so the binary and especially the plugins are in the right location/path.

A deb could be setup to do this automatically and I guess that's what the realplayer package does.

Anyway, I guess you an remove it unless someone can update the package. Unfortunately, I don't know how.

Actually, I just downloaded the source and maybe it wouldn't be too hard to update the package. Is the maintainer interested in patches or is it a goner given that it's been dropped from Debian too?

Maybe, Easy Ubuntu is the way to go.

The Real Player 10 package is available in Canonical commercial repository. Please check my comment on bug #32738 for solution.

Archive team, this hackish installer package is obsoleted by the complete one in the commercial repository. It provides a newer version and a better user experience, so we want users to find that one instead of this one. I think it's best to remove it.
